Robert Pires story - back of today's Mercury

Unlock the thread, brothers and sisters!

The back of this morning's Mercury is a story about Robert Pires claiming that we have been trying quite hard to sign him. It's not made it onto the Blue Army website yet, but it was there on my doorstep as I left for work. Yeah! I get The Mercury delivered. How delightfully quaint!

Anyway, I've no idea what the rest of the story says because if I'd hung around to read it I would have set my burglar alarm off. It could say that the club have called him a willy puller and claimed that he's made it all up, for all I know

Leicester City want to sign me, claims World Cup winner Robert Pires

1622845.jpgRobert PiresFormer World Cup winner Robert Pires has claimed Leicester City have "made serious inquiries" about signing him.

The 36-year-old ex-Arsenal midfielder is a free agent after being released by Spanish side Villarreal.

Pires, who was a member of the France team that won the World Cup in 1998, has told French journalists in South Africa that he wants to return to England.

He said he had been told of Leicester's interest. However, sources at City have poured cold water on Pires' claim.

West Ham United have been strongly linked with Pires, but he has been quoted as telling French journalists that there has been contact from other English clubs, and that he would be open to going on trial during pre-season.

"If the right kind of club expresses an interest, I have no problem going over and doing a pre-season so they can have a closer look at me," said Pires, who scored 84 goals in 238 starts at Highbury.

"There's obviously a few big English teams chasing me. I'm told Leicester and Birmingham have made serious inquires.

"I still think I can play in the Premier League, but the challenge of getting a team like Leicester promoted is very appealing, especially with maybe two seasons left in my legs."

City have moved for a big international name before when they made a bid to sign former Holland internationalEdgar Davids last season.

Manager Nigel Pearson did publicly state that City had expressed an interest in the former Ajax and Tottenham midfielder, but no deal was agreed at the time.

However, it is unlikely that City would make an approach for Pires as his wage demands would be high, and would eat up a large portion of Pearson's budget.

City have signed the 36-year-old former Newcastle United and Aston Villa midfielder Nolberto Solano on a new six-month contract, but are understood to be looking to recruit young prospects that can develop under Pearson and his coaching staff.

lol

I can't believe this has actually become a genuine rumour after that last thread.

I can't help but feel intrigued by it all...

Two seasons left in his legs? I think he's got a bit mixed up.. Surely he means his legs went two years ago. No thanks.

Yes please.

If he was 50 he'd still rip the hell out of most Championship full backs.

On a free this would be an amazing signing. Wage wise, I doubt we'd need to offer mega money. I mean, who would pay over £20k a week for a 36 year old?

"West Ham United have been strongly linked with Pires"

Gold and Sullivan would.

True.

Although from Pires's point of view, West Ham are likely to struggle again next year and I doubt at his age he wants to be embroiled in that sort of mentality whereas we are on the up and challenging for promotion.

I doubt he'll come here but i'd love to see it.

Not sure he fits in to what Pearson is after, he was a fairy at the best of times he would get battered in the championship

Just what I was thinking. He wouldn't hack it in the championship where 80% of the teams (including us) play kick and rush and the games are played with little pattern and at 100 miles an hour.

Robert Pires even at 36 would piss all over any wingers we currently have. Quality player though would want too much money probably.

From his quotes he sounds like he is interested in us, very strange.

Milan has been looking for the "marquee" signing since he has been at the club.

chuffin love it!

lol

It could of course be a case of Pires or his agent using us as a sounding board to drum up- prem interest. If he is willing to come here he for sure would go to a lowly prem team.....

All this budget thing is nonsense... if the right player came along MM would suddenly find the money from somewhere..

Agree.

He's been trying to sign a big name player since he arrived to try and get the gates up.

We tried the budget version with Paul Dickov but that didnt work out but Davids or Pires would be fantastic signings.
